Suspicious Email Circulating

The State of Washington sent out the following information regarding a suspicious and potentially harmful email which is circulating to insurance professionals. On September 6, 2019 the Washington Office of the Insurance Commission sent:

Alert: Beware of suspicious email

We have received notification from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) that fake emails are being sent with NAIC branding that contain malicious software.

If you receive an email with National Association of Insurance Commissioners as the subject line and the email contains a link, please treat the email as suspicious.

There are several versions of this email circulating: One from a phony consumerprotection@naic.orgaddress and the other from complaint.dept.inquiries@gmail.com. Both use the branding from the NAIC and the Center for Insurance Policy & research.

The emails contain a link that downloads a malicious Remote Access Trojan that provides complete control of an infected system and delivers an array of features to the remote attacker.

Certain anti-virus products will detect this is a malicious email, but if you receive a similar email and have any concerns, contact the NAIC Service Desk at (816) 783-8500 orhelp@naic.org.

Please be remember to be vigilant as to the links you click on and what emails you open so that you protect yourself and your client’s data.
